Japanese Basic Particles
は / が / を / で / へ / に / と / も
■ 日本語の助詞は たくさん あるし、使い分けも しなければいけないし、覚えるのは 大変です。
にほんご の じょしは たくさん あるし、つかいわけも しなければいけないし、おぼえるの は たいへんです。
There are many particles in Japanese grammars and also we need to use properly, so that it’s tough to learn.
■ ここでは、基本的な 日本語助詞を 紹介します。
ここでは、きほんてきな にほんご じょしを しょうかいします。
I’ll introduce the basic Japanese particles here.
【Particles and Function】
■ が 【Subject】
たなかさん が きます。
Mr/Mrs. Tanaka will come.
「たなかさん」is the subject of this sentence. It indicates that 「たなかさん」will come and not other person.

Q:だれ が きますか?
A:たなかさん が きます。
Q:なに が おもしろいですか?
A:SFのほん が おもしろいです。
Like the example above, the question, to ask what/who as a subject, follows with が。For the reponse, が is also used.
*が applied for the Phenomenon/Nature
あめ が ふる it will rain
おと が おおきい sound is loud
■ は 【Topic】
りょこう は つま が よていを たてる。
About a trip, my wife will make a plan/organise.
「りょこう trip」is topic of this sentence and also it’s still the topic of the conversation until it shifts to other things. For example, the sentence でも、わたしが ホテルや こうくうけんを よやくする。( But I will book a hotel and airplain tickets)can be followed.New subject of「わたし」is marked with が. The topic is still「りょこう」.
りょこう は つま が よていを たてる。
でも、わたしが ホテルや こうくうけんを よやくする。
■ を 【Object for a verb】
すし を たべる
eat sushi
「すし」is the direct object of the verb 「たべる」. In Japanese, with を, we can add an object to the verb. this sentence.

■ で 【Place of action】
レストラン で すし を たべる
eat sushi at the restaurant
We can add the place where the action takes place with で. In the sentence above, the action すしを たべる is taken place レストラン.

■ へ/に 【direction/destination】
わたしは アメリカ へ いく。
I will go to US.
かれは うち に かえる。
He will return home.
ともだち へ てがみを かく
to write a letter to a friend
To discribe the direction or destination, we use へ or に with the movement verbs, like いく(to go), くる(to come), かえる(to return) , etc.

かれは うち に かえる。
He will return home.
はは に メッセージを おくる
to send a message to my mother
Like へ, に indicate the direction or destination.
②time and date
7じ に うちに かえる
to return home at 7:00
5がつ15にち にアメリカに いく
to go to US on 15th of May.
③objective/purpose
かいもの に いく
to go shopping
にほんに にほんご の べんきょう に きた
came to Japan for Japanese study

たなかさん と よしださん は がくせいです。
Mr/Mrs Tanaka and Mr/Mrs Yoshida are students.
すし と てんぷら を たべる
to eatsushi and tempura
② With
1)わたしは がっこう に いく。
I will go to school.
When we add 「with Mr/Mrs Tanaka」to the sentence 1), we say たなかさん と。
2)わたしは たなかさん と がっこう に いく。
I will go to school with Mr/Mrs Tanaka.
■ も 【also/too】
Particle も means 「also/too」. Here is a rule for how to use も。
・は / が → も
・ を → も
・ で → でも
・に / へ → にも / へも

たなかさん は がくせいです。
Mr/Mrs Tanaka is student.
よしださん も がくせいです。
Mr/Mrs Yoshida is student, too.

わたし は すし を たべる。
I will eat sushi.
わたし は やきとり も たべる。
I will eat yakitori, too.
*** で → でも ***
わたし は フランス で べんきょうした。
I studied in France.
わたし は スペイン でも べんきょうした。
I studied in Spain, too.

かのじょ は きょうと へ いく。
She will go to Kyoto.
かのじょ は おおさか へも いく。
She will go to Osaka, too.
